This article from The Arab Times by Cinatra Fernandes stresses the idea that 'not all are racist' in Kuwaiti society. This poll displayed all the statistics & opinions of the citizens of Kuwait, saying that almost 50% of the population "felt that discrimination based on skin color and nationality was rampant" and only 4% of the population "has never experienced or heard instances of racism in Kuwait." However, Kuwaitis believe that the view of the individual actions of certain people should not contaminate the reputation of the entire country. One citizen even stated that "it is wrong to say that all Kuwaitis are racist. There are many who value the contributions the expatriate population has made to our country and respect them for having left their homes and families behind to come here and help build our nation." Basically the whole point of this article is to eliminate prejudice thoughts/actions & educate those outside of Kuwait on how the citizens really are-- just normal people.
I selected this story because I like the message of how although some people may not understand or realize it, prejudice/racism is very apparent in today's society & is so shaped based on what we (as Americans) are only subjected to see. We really don't have a good idea about what's going on around the world, so seeing things like this that open our eyes to show us that we're all just human beings trying to live life, I think that's a pretty cool thing that we need to be reminded of from time to time. This reflects the social issue of racism that has always been apparent in history, as well as the political issue of (basically) propaganda, only being shown certain things in our own country. It gives us insight of the culture in other societies, stating how they just want to be accepted and not judged based on certain peoples' opinions (just like everyone else!). I feel like we could totally fix this problem in society if we could just not judge people based on other peoples' opinions/actions and realize that we're all equal! (Although that'll probably never happen because some are less understanding than others, it'd be really cool if it actually could happen.)
